Brazil is embarking on an exciting new chapter in its renewable energy journey with the establishment of the country’s inaugural offshore wind training and education programs. Spearheaded by the Centre for Gas Technologies and Renewable Energies (CTGAS-ER) and in collaboration with the UK-based Ocean Energy Pathway, this initiative aims to equip professionals with essential skills to thrive in the burgeoning offshore wind sector. The programs will encompass a variety of training courses, including a postgraduate program designed to cultivate expertise among specialists in this emerging industry. With significant investments lined up for offshore wind projects across Brazil, these educational efforts are poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of renewable energy in the country.

Launching Brazil’s Offshore Wind Training Initiative

This month marks a pivotal moment for Brazil’s renewable energy landscape as CTGAS-ER, part of SENAI’s Institute for Innovation in Renewable Energy, launches its first joint training program focused exclusively on offshore wind energy. This initiative is particularly noteworthy as it highlights Brazil’s commitment to harnessing its vast offshore resources while ensuring that there is a skilled workforce ready to support this growth.

The Basic Training course will take place as a pilot project in Rio Grande do Norte, engaging 60 participants from various institutions including FAETI (the Faculty of Renewable Energies and Industrial Technologies), CTGAS-ER, ISI-ER (SENAI Institute for Innovation in Renewable Energies), and UFERSA (Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid). This collaborative approach aims to provide comprehensive training that covers all aspects of offshore wind energy development.

Comprehensive Curriculum for Future Professionals

Amora Vieira, director at CTGAS-ER, emphasizes that the curriculum offers an extensive overview ranging from fundamental technology principles to complex stages involved in wind farm development. Participants will engage with topics such as environmental licensing processes, stakeholder engagement strategies, supply chain logistics, engineering practices, operations and maintenance (O&M), energy trading methodologies, and project decommissioning protocols.

This holistic approach ensures that graduates are well-equipped to navigate the intricacies of the offshore wind sector. The aim is not just to provide foundational knowledge but also practical skills that can be applied directly within industry contexts.

Postgraduate Course Launching Soon

In addition to basic training programs, SENAI-RN is set to introduce Brazil’s first postgraduate course specifically targeting offshore wind energy specialists. Scheduled for launch on January 23rd, 2026, this 14-month program will take place at FAETI’s headquarters in Natal. It promises an advanced level of study aimed at cultivating highly skilled professionals who can drive innovation within Brazil’s growing offshore wind industry.

Rodrigo Mello, director of SENAI-RN and ISI-ER along with FAETI, notes that collaborations with both national and international bodies are vital for developing a workforce capable of meeting industry demands. He shares optimism about replicating previous successes achieved through onshore wind power initiatives over the past 15 years.

The Growing Landscape of Offshore Wind Projects

As educational initiatives ramp up across Brazil’s renewable sector, so too does activity surrounding actual offshore projects. Currently, there are 104 projects undergoing licensing processes at IBAMA (the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources). These proposals span several states including Rio Grande do Sul, Ceará, Rio de Janeiro, Piauí among others—indicating an expansive interest in capitalizing on Brazil’s coastline resources.

A notable achievement includes CTGAS-ER’s pilot project located off the coast of Rio Grande do Norte which has successfully secured preliminary licensing status—a significant milestone as it represents tangible progress toward operationalizing new technologies within this sector.

A Bright Future Ahead

SENAI-RN anticipates obtaining installation permits for this pilot project within a span of 12–18 months and aims to have it fully operational within three years. This timeline underscores both urgency and potential as stakeholders seek swift advancements toward realizing their ambitions within renewable energies.
