In a significant strategic move to enhance its renewable energy portfolio, LS Power has announced its agreement to acquire bp’s U.S. onshore wind business, comprising a substantial capacity of approximately 1,700 MW from ten operational wind projects. This acquisition aligns with LS Power’s mission to create a cleaner and more reliable energy ecosystem. With the integration of these assets into its existing fleet, LS Power aims to reinforce its commitment to sustainable energy solutions while expanding Clearlight Energy’s operational footprint across the U.S. and Canada. As both companies transition through this deal, experts anticipate that the collaboration will streamline operations and further drive the development of renewable energy assets in line with growing demand.

LS Power’s Strategic Acquisition

On July 18, 2025, LS Power, a prominent developer of power and energy infrastructure in North America, finalized an agreement to acquire several onshore wind farms from bp Wind Energy North America. This deal encompasses around 1,700 MW of operating wind generation capacity derived from ten distinct projects located throughout various states including Indiana, Kansas, South Dakota, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, and Idaho.

LS Power is based in New York and boasts a robust operational portfolio comprising over 21,000 MW of diverse energy resources such as renewable technologies and flexible gas generation capabilities. In addition to this acquisition, LS Power is also actively engaged in constructing or developing more than 350 miles of transmission infrastructure aimed at enhancing its energy distribution network.

Impact on Clearlight Energy

The completion of this acquisition is anticipated by late 2025. Once finalized, bp Wind Energy will be integrated into Clearlight Energy—an entity within LS Power that concentrates on renewable power generation across the U.S. and Canada. This strategic addition will elevate Clearlight’s operational capacity significantly to approximately 4,300 MW. The acquisition not only diversifies Clearlight’s portfolio but also extends beyond its current focus areas in wind and solar technologies as well as battery storage systems.

A Commitment to Clean Energy Solutions

Paul Segal, CEO of LS Power expressed optimism regarding the acquisition stating that it embodies their mission “to solve complex energy problems.” He emphasized that integrating bp Wind Energy aligns seamlessly with their goal to develop an efficient and sustainable energy ecosystem while improving accessibility for consumers.

This sentiment was echoed by William Lin from bp who acknowledged the importance of transitioning ownership for the wind business while ensuring ongoing support for operational safety and reliability during this transition phase.

The Significance of Renewable Investments

The acquired bp wind farms have been instrumental in supplying electricity to over 15 off-takers across various regions in the U.S., showcasing their potential impact on local economies and environmental sustainability efforts. The facilities included in this transaction are:

  • Fowler Ridge 1 (Indiana): Gross capacity of 288 MW.
  • Fowler Ridge 3 (Indiana): Gross capacity of 99 MW.
  • Flat Ridge 1 (Kansas): Gross capacity of 44 MW.
  • Flat Ridge 2 (Kansas): Gross capacity of 470 MW.
  • Titan (South Dakota): Gross capacity of 25 MW.
  • Cedar Creek 2 (Colorado): Gross capacity of 248 MW.
  • Fowler Ridge 2 (Indiana): Gross capacity of 200 MW.
  • Mehoopany (Pennsylvania): Gross capacity of 141 MW.
  • Auwahi (Hawaii): Gross capacity of 21 MW.
  • Goshen 2 (Idaho): Gross capacity of 125 MW.

The Future Outlook for Renewable Energy Development

The integration process promises new growth opportunities for both LS Power and Clearlight Energy as they strive towards creating sustainable solutions within the renewable sector. Jeff Norman, CEO at Clearlight Energy expressed enthusiasm about welcoming bp Wind Energy into their family organization which focuses solely on natural energy solutions aimed at fostering long-term growth strategies vital for accelerating transitions toward cleaner futures.

This collaboration enhances not only resource availability but also leverages complementary expertise among teams dedicated to advancing renewable technologies—a crucial factor given today’s escalating demand for clean energy sources as policies evolve globally towards sustainability goals.
