Blue Energy Africa has successfully installed a 435 kW hybrid solar and battery storage system for Naboom Plastic, a plastic bag producer located in Mookgophong, Limpopo, South Africa. This innovative system has significantly improved energy security and operational resilience for Naboom Plastic, reducing their grid electricity usage by 80% to 90%. The positive impact of this hybrid system is evident in the clearance of a 60-ton production backlog caused by loadshedding, benefiting the company’s 64 employees and their families.

Enhancing Operational Efficiency with Renewable Energy

The installation of a robust hybrid solar and battery storage system at Naboom Plastic has revolutionized their production processes. Loadshedding previously disrupted their operations, leading to limited working hours and production waste. Co-founder Koos Lancaster highlighted the challenges faced by the company during loadshedding and how the new system has transformed their efficiency and productivity.

Overcoming Energy Supply Challenges

Loadshedding, compounded by disruptions from the local municipality, posed significant obstacles to Naboom Plastic’s operations. However, the implementation of the hybrid solar system has played a crucial role in reducing their production backlog. With the ability to complete orders more efficiently, the company has experienced a positive impact on their financial stability and operational continuity.

Environmental Sustainability and Economic Growth

Marcel Steinberg, CEO of Blue Energy Africa, emphasized the importance of resilient renewable energy systems in fostering sustainability and economic development within communities. The successful collaboration between Blue Energy Africa and Naboom Plastic showcases the tangible benefits of integrating renewable energy solutions into industrial operations.

Investing in Sustainable Solutions

The project at Naboom Plastic was made possible through funding from Gaia Fund Managers’ Renewables Real Estate Investment Trust, demonstrating the potential for profitable investments that drive positive environmental and social outcomes. Dr. Hendrik Snyman, CIO and director at Gaia, highlighted the dual impact of such projects in generating profits with a purpose, benefiting both the environment and individuals’ lives.

Empowering Communities through Renewable Energy

The successful installation of the hybrid solar system at Naboom Plastic exemplifies the transformative power of renewable energy solutions in enhancing operational efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and fostering economic growth. By harnessing the potential of clean energy technologies, companies like Naboom Plastic can create a more sustainable and resilient future for themselves and their communities.
