The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a significant investment in clean energy projects across rural Utah. This initiative, totaling $1,162,239, aims to reduce energy bills, increase access to clean energy, and create jobs for agricultural producers and small businesses in the region. These projects are part of President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, marking a substantial effort to combat the climate crisis. To streamline the process for rural communities to access federal funding for clean energy projects, USDA has also introduced the “Rural Energy Resource Guide.”

Projects in Rural Utah

In Box Elder County, NooSun Dairy will receive $99,250 to install a 100 kW solar array, saving $25,734 annually. Jackson Excavation Inc. in Wayne County will utilize a $47,381 grant for a 20.44 kW solar PV system, expected to save $4,349 annually. Shalan’s Enterprises, Inc. in Sanpete County will install a 9.49 kW solar PV system with a $20,000 grant, replacing 23% of their annual electric use.

Advancing President Biden’s Agenda

These projects align with President Biden’s goal of boosting the nation’s economy from the bottom up. By creating jobs and fostering economic growth in rural communities through clean energy initiatives, the USDA is supporting the administration’s vision. The Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) is a key component of the Justice40 Initiative, aimed at ensuring that 40% of the benefits from federal climate and clean energy investments reach marginalized communities.

REAP Program Overview

The REAP program assists agricultural producers and rural small businesses in adopting renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency. By utilizing wind, solar, geothermal, and small hydropower energy, participants can enhance their income, address climate change, and lower energy costs. Since the start of the Biden-Harris Administration, over $9.7 million has been invested in Utah through REAP, benefitting 129 renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.

Rural Energy Resource Guide

The newly unveiled Rural Energy Resource Guide aims to simplify the process of accessing federal funding for clean energy projects. By highlighting USDA Rural Development programs that support renewable energy systems and infrastructure in rural America, the guide offers various funding opportunities. From energy-efficient home repairs to generating emergency energy, the guide provides valuable information to individuals and organizations seeking financial assistance.

Overall, the USDA’s investment in clean energy projects in rural Utah underscores the commitment to sustainability, economic growth, and job creation. By supporting renewable energy initiatives and promoting energy efficiency, these projects contribute to a more resilient and environmentally conscious future for rural communities.
