Construction has officially begun on the SunCentral solar park in South Africa’s Northern Cape province, marking the first phase of SolarAfrica Energy’s 1 GW solar plant project. This ambitious initiative will be completed in three phases, with the initial phase expected to produce approximately 342 MW of clean energy. The total investment for the first phase is estimated at ZAR5bn (US$272m), including the construction of a key transmission substation valued at around ZAR1bn (US$54.5m). This major undertaking is part of the country’s efforts to boost clean energy production and diversify its electricity mix through the REIPPPP program, a partnership between SolarAfrica and South African utility Eskom.

South Africa’s Energy Landscape

As of the end of 2023, South Africa’s installed capacity reached 65 GW, with 77% of the energy coming from thermal sources, predominantly coal at 73%. Solar energy accounted for 9.5% of the country’s energy mix. Despite the long-term goal of achieving a net zero energy system by 2050, South Africa currently faces challenges such as frequent power outages that require immediate attention.
