India’s rooftop solar potential has the capacity to revolutionize the country’s energy landscape, providing a sustainable, decentralized, and cost-effective solution to meet the growing electricity demands while promoting consumer self-reliance. As of March 31, 2024, India had an installed rooftop solar capacity of 11.87 GW, with an annual growth rate of 2.99 GW, marking significant progress in the renewable energy sector. However, to achieve the ambitious goal of installing 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, rooftop solar alone needs to contribute about 100 GW.

Understanding the Rooftop Solar Program

The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, launched in 2010, aimed to produce 20 GW of solar energy, including rooftop solar, in three phases. The government later revised the target to 100 GW by 2022, extending the deadline to 2026 for achieving 40 GW in rooftop solar installations. Favorable initiatives, financial incentives, technological advancements, and awareness campaigns have driven improvements in rooftop solar adoption.

State-wise Progress in Rooftop Solar

States like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan have made significant strides in rooftop solar installations, with capacities of 3,456 MW, 2,072 MW, and 1,154 MW, respectively. However, states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand are yet to tap into their full rooftop solar potential due to bureaucratic hurdles and lack of awareness. The ‘Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’ aims to fit 1 crore households with rooftop solar systems, contributing 20 GW to the total capacity.

Strategies for Rooftop Solar Growth

To ensure the growth of rooftop solar, creating awareness among consumers, making it economically viable, promoting research and development in solar technology, investing in training programs, and updating policies are crucial steps. By repurposing existing content and leveraging different formats for email marketing, you can amplify your marketing efforts, engage with a wider audience, and promote the adoption of rooftop solar to achieve India’s clean energy goals.
