The Bundelkhand Expressway in Uttar Pradesh is taking a significant step towards enhancing road safety by implementing solar-powered CCTV cameras to monitor overspeeding vehicles. This 296 km four-lane expressway has been constructed at a cost of around ₹14,850 crore under the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA). The use of solar panels to illuminate the road makes it the first highway in Uttar Pradesh to adopt this eco-friendly approach.

Solar-Powered CCTV Cameras for Enhanced Traffic Monitoring

The Bundelkhand Expressway will be equipped with an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) to efficiently monitor traffic movement and curb overspeeding. Since its inauguration by PM Narendra Modi in July 2022, this greenfield expressway has been fully powered by solar energy. The ATMS will utilize solar-powered cameras to ensure effective traffic monitoring along the fourth longest expressway in the state.

Efficient Traffic Management with Solar Energy

The Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) has called for applications from companies to implement the ATMS project. The Traffic Management Command Centre, a key component of this system, will feature advanced surveillance technology, internet and SMS servers, and high-capacity storage for recordings and backups. With 150 solar-powered cameras installed at 50 locations, the expressway aims to enhance road safety and traffic control.

Key Features of the Advanced Traffic Management System

The solar-powered cameras on the Bundelkhand Expressway can operate for up to four days without the need for recharging. In addition to monitoring traffic flow, the system will include motion detection surveillance cameras, vehicle speed detection systems, and speed detection radars with a range of 90 meters. The installation of nearly 900 cameras, along with emergency telephone helpline consoles and biometric fingerprint scanners, will further enhance traffic monitoring capabilities.

Procurement and Maintenance of Equipment

UPEIDA has invited tenders from agencies to manage the procurement, installation, operation, and maintenance of the ATMS equipment for a period of five years. The selected agency will play a crucial role in ensuring the effective functioning of the system and contributing to road safety initiatives. By leveraging solar energy and advanced technology, the Bundelkhand Expressway aims to set new standards for traffic management and surveillance in the region.
