Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, along with County Council President Andrew Friedson and Councilmembers, led the groundbreaking ceremony for the nation’s largest renewable energy-powered zero-emission bus depot. The ceremony took place at the County’s David F. Bone Equipment Maintenance and Transit Operation Center (EMTOC) in Derwood. The project aims to integrate a microgrid that will feature electric bus charging and on-site green hydrogen production powered by solar and battery energy storage.

Revolutionizing Public Transit with Renewable Energy

The EMTOC microgrid project is a groundbreaking initiative that will accommodate 200 zero-emissions buses by 2035. Most of these buses will be hydrogen fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs), which offer a greater range compared to battery electric buses. This project marks the County’s commitment to sustainability and clean energy production, positioning Montgomery County as a national leader in green public transit.

Leading the Charge Towards Sustainability

Montgomery County’s partnership with AlphaStruxure has enabled the rapid development of this innovative microgrid project. By leveraging renewable energy sources and cutting-edge technologies, the County is taking significant steps towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner air in the community. The project is expected to be completed by 2025, providing renewable energy back to the grid and powering zero-emissions buses efficiently.
