Colombia brings Agrovoltaic Energy Communities to Indigenous Peoples in Guainía.

Colombia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, in partnership with the Institute for Planning and Promotion of Energy Solutions (IPSE), has successfully implemented agrovoltaic energy communities with diesel backup for indigenous populations in Guainía. This initiative aimed to provide sustainable energy solutions tailored to the social, cultural, and economic dynamics of the region. The project included the installation of solar panels and the creation of hybrid generation systems to enhance energy access and agricultural production in the communities of Chatare, Carpintero, and Venado. The investment for this project amounted to 15,250 million Colombian pesos, demonstrating a commitment to renewable energy and community development.

Empowering Indigenous Communities with Sustainable Energy Solutions

The Ministry of Mines and Energy, led by Minister Andrés Camacho, has emphasized the importance of these agrovoltaic energy communities in promoting both clean energy generation and agricultural productivity. By integrating photovoltaic energy systems with agricultural practices, these communities can enhance their self-sufficiency and contribute to sustainable development. The hybrid generation plants established in Chatare, Carpintero, and Venado showcase the innovative approach to energy access and environmental stewardship.

Enhancing Energy Access and Agricultural Productivity

In Chatare, a hybrid generation plant with a capacity of 70.87 kWp has been installed, providing energy for the community’s needs while also serving as an orchard for agricultural activities. Similarly, Carpintero and Venado received hybrid generation plants with capacities of 87.48 kWp and 61.96 kWp, respectively. These installations demonstrate the dual benefits of agrovoltaic systems in promoting energy efficiency and agricultural sustainability. Director Danny Ramírez of IPSE highlighted the significance of these projects in addressing the unique energy challenges faced by indigenous populations in remote areas.

By incorporating solar panels and hybrid generation systems into the communities of Guainía, the Ministry of Mines and Energy and IPSE have not only provided clean energy solutions but also empowered indigenous populations to harness renewable resources for their economic development.
