Centura College in Norfolk is taking a step towards a more sustainable future with the installation of a new two-bladed wind turbine on its campus. This 11-kilowatt turbine, manufactured by Ryse Energy in the United Kingdom, is a symbol of the college’s commitment to green energy training and reducing its carbon footprint. Let’s dive deeper into this innovative initiative and explore how it is shaping the future of energy education.

Centura College’s Green Energy Training Hub

The new two-bladed, G-11 wind turbine installed at Centura College’s Norfolk campus is a towering structure that requires a wind speed of 7 mph to spin continuously. With a rotor diameter of 40 feet, this turbine is not only a functional energy source but also serves as a training aid for students pursuing a career in the wind energy industry. President and CEO, Joel English, envisions the campus as a hub for green energy job training, preparing students for the growing demand in wind energy in the Hampton Roads area.

Hands-On Training for Future Technicians

Centura College has been offering wind turbine technician training since 2020, with a curriculum designed to equip students with the skills needed to excel in the industry. The program includes hands-on experience with smaller wind turbines, climbing towers, and energy production trainers to help students earn their Global Wind Organization certifications. The addition of a functioning wind turbine on campus enhances the training experience and provides students with practical knowledge they can apply in their future careers.

Expanding the Curriculum to Solar Energy

In addition to wind energy training, Centura College is launching a solar technician program to educate students on the installation and maintenance of solar panels. By diversifying its green energy curriculum, the college is preparing electricians and renewable energy technicians to be at the forefront of emerging technologies in the Hampton Roads region. This holistic approach to energy education reflects Centura College’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Empowering Students for a Sustainable Future

Centura College’s investment in green energy training not only benefits the environment but also empowers students to become leaders in the renewable energy sector. By providing a comprehensive education that covers a range of energy sources and technologies, the college is shaping the next generation of technicians who will drive the transition towards a more sustainable future. The wind turbine and solar programs at Centura College are not just about generating energy – they are about generating opportunities for students to make a meaningful impact in the world of green technology.
