In a groundbreaking partnership between Fort Liberty and Duke Energy, the military’s largest Army installation is transitioning to solar power. This initiative is part of President Biden’s plan to have the federal government powered entirely by clean electricity by 2030. The collaboration between Fort Liberty, the Biden administration, and Duke Energy marks a significant milestone in the adoption of clean energy in the Carolinas.

Historic Transition to Solar Power

The installation of a floating solar panel system in Big Muddy Lake at Camp Mackall will provide Fort Liberty with 75% of its electricity for the next 15 years. This self-contained system ensures that Fort Liberty can operate independently, even in the face of external challenges such as climate change or national security emergencies. The partnership not only promotes sustainability but also saves Fort Liberty $80,000 annually on electricity costs.

Optimizing Energy and Land Usage

The new solar array at Fort Liberty optimizes energy and land usage by utilizing just two acres of water instead of eight to nine acres of training land. This innovative approach not only enhances energy efficiency but also provides a safe habitat for fish in the area. Col. John Wilcox, the garrison commander at Fort Liberty, highlights the environmental and operational benefits of this solar array.

Strategic Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

Duke Energy’s collaboration with the Department of Defense on this project showcases a commitment to renewable energy and sustainability. The success of this initiative in the Carolinas has paved the way for similar projects in other regions. Kendal Bowman, the Duke Energy North Carolina state president, emphasizes the transformative nature of this partnership and its impact on meeting customer demands for renewable energy.
