Montgomery County, Maryland, in collaboration with AlphaStruxure, is embarking on the construction of the largest renewable energy-powered bus depot in the United States. This groundbreaking project will not only be the largest transit depot microgrid in the country but also the first on the East Coast to produce green hydrogen onsite. The initiative, delivered through Energy as a Service, will feature electric bus charging and onsite green hydrogen production powered by solar and battery energy storage, enabling the depot to operate independently in “island mode.”

The Largest Renewable Energy-Powered Bus Depot

The 5.65-megawatt microgrid project at the David F. Bone Equipment Maintenance and Transit Operations Center will revolutionize the way public transportation operates in Montgomery County. By 2035, the depot is expected to accommodate 200 zero-emissions buses, the majority of which will be hydrogen fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs). These buses, powered by hydrogen and oxygen, emit only water, making them a sustainable choice for the county’s fleet.

AlphaStruxure’s Role in the Transition to Zero-Emissions Transit

Juan Macias, CEO of AlphaStruxure, commended Montgomery County for its commitment to zero-emissions transit and emphasized the importance of pairing sustainable infrastructure with eco-friendly buses. The green hydrogen bus depot microgrid is a significant step towards achieving the county’s environmental goals and is expected to be operational by 2025. Once online, the system will not only power zero-emissions buses but also send renewable energy back to the grid.

The Future of Sustainable Public Transportation

This ambitious project follows the successful launch of the Brookville Smart Energy Bus Depot in 2022, marking Montgomery County’s dedication to eco-friendly transit solutions. With around 335 zero-emissions buses expected to be powered by these microgrid facilities, the county is setting a new standard for sustainable public transportation in the United States. The green hydrogen bus depot microgrid represents a significant milestone in the county’s journey towards a greener, more sustainable future.
