Germany has committed Tk2,215 crore (€191 million) to support Bangladesh in its energy transition and sustainable development efforts. This financial aid encompasses 13 projects targeting different sectors such as energy transition, sustainable urban development, supply chain improvements, biodiversity conservation, and women’s empowerment. The collaboration between Germany and Bangladesh highlights Germany’s dedication to aiding Bangladesh in its progress towards a more sustainable and inclusive future.

Renewable Energy Program

One of the key projects in the collaboration between Bangladesh and Germany is the Renewable Energy Program. This program, supported by KfW, focuses on promoting renewable energy technologies in Bangladesh through IDCOL. The initiative provides loan funds for commercial and industrial-scale solar rooftop projects, ensuring a shift towards cleaner energy sources. Additionally, grant funds are allocated for off-grid renewable energy projects, such as solar irrigation pumps, small solar-driven electricity grids, biogas systems, and solar cold storage facilities.

Objectives of the Renewable Energy Program

The primary objective of the Renewable Energy Program is to improve access to electricity from renewable sources, particularly for income-generating purposes. By reducing reliance on traditional energy sources, the program aims to boost local economies and significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to fostering sustainable development and enhancing the quality of life for communities across Bangladesh.

Advancements in Renewable Energy in Germany

Various organizations in Germany are leading advancements in renewable energy and energy efficiency. Companies like Siemens AG, Enercon GmbH, SMA Solar Technology AG, Fraunhofer ISE, and E.ON SE are actively involved in developing and implementing renewable energy technologies. These organizations specialize in areas such as wind energy, solar energy, energy storage, and smart grid technologies, contributing to Germany’s position as a leader in renewable energy transition.

Major Programs in Renewable Energy Cooperation

The collaboration between Germany and Bangladesh features two major programs: the Productive Use of Renewable Energy Program (PUREP) and the Renewable Energy Program. Both programs aim to enhance access to electricity from renewable sources, reduce reliance on traditional energy sources, boost local economies, improve living conditions, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

PUREP and Renewable Energy Program Objectives

PUREP focuses on replacing diesel-driven irrigation pumps with solar pumps and providing concessional financing for off-grid renewable energy technologies. The Renewable Energy Program promotes renewable energy technologies through IDCOL, providing loan funds for solar rooftop projects and supporting off-grid renewable energy projects. Both programs aim to enhance access to renewable energy for income-generating purposes and drive sustainable development in Bangladesh.

Improvement of Power Transmission Program

The “Improvement of Power Transmission Program in the Western Zone / Energy Efficiency in the Grid-Based Power Supply” aims to enhance the reliability and efficiency of power transmission across Bangladesh. By rehabilitating and constructing key substations and transmission lines, the program seeks to achieve CO2 savings, address environmental and social issues, and ensure equitable distribution of electricity.

Modernization of Power Distribution

The “Modernization of Power Distribution – Smart Grids Phase I” project focuses on improving living conditions and business operations by reducing losses and providing a more reliable electricity supply. Activities include renovating substations, constructing distribution lines, introducing automated network control systems, and strengthening operational aspects of power distribution companies in Bangladesh.

Energising Development Bangladesh Program

The “Energising Development Bangladesh (EnDev)” program aims to provide efficient and clean cooking solutions, promote the productive use of solar energy technology, and support local communities’ livelihoods. By developing markets for modern energy facilities and promoting clean alternative cooking fuels, the EnDev program contributes to enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability in Bangladesh.
