A solar-powered ferry has recently entered service in India’s Punjab state, marking a significant step towards sustainable marine transportation. Constructed by Indian boatbuilder NavAlt Solar and Electric Boats, this innovative vessel is the fourth in a series of catamaran ferries equipped with photovoltaic panels. The ferry will primarily operate in Sukna Lake in Chandigarh, Punjab, offering eco-friendly transportation solutions for locals and tourists alike.

Key Features of the Solar-Powered Ferry

The solar-powered ferry boasts impressive features, including a length of 12 meters, seating for up to 30 passengers, and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. The vessel is powered by two 12kW electric outboard engines, providing a service speed of six knots and a range of 45 kilometers. Solar power, generated by a 3kW plant, further enhances the ferry’s sustainability credentials.

Modular Construction for Easy Assembly

One of the standout features of the solar-powered ferry is its modular construction, which allows for easy disassembly, transportation in multiple containers, and quick re-assembly on-site. This innovative design not only enhances the vessel’s portability but also reduces logistical challenges associated with ferry transportation.

Entertainment and Versatile Usage

Passengers aboard the solar-powered ferry can enjoy a comfortable journey, thanks to the main cabin’s entertainment system comprising a TV screen and speakers. In addition to regular ferry services, the vessel can be utilized for sightseeing trips and private event charters, offering a versatile and sustainable transportation option for various occasions.

Operational Details and Partnerships

The solar-powered ferry is operated by Navya Luxury Cruise on behalf of Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO), highlighting the collaborative efforts between public and private entities to promote sustainable transportation solutions. This partnership aims to enhance tourism experiences while reducing the environmental impact of traditional ferry operations.
