Community cheers for St. Peter’s solar-geothermal project.

Embracing renewable energy sources is becoming increasingly important in today’s world, and St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Champaign is setting an example with its solar-geothermal project. This innovative initiative has been welcomed by the community, showcasing the church’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The Journey to Solar Power

Initially, the church had planned to install solar panels on its roof, following the trend of many private residences. However, due to the design of the church’s roof, this was not feasible. Instead, the decision was made to install a large solar array on a grassy patch just south of the church. This array, although more visible to the neighbors, was met with positivity from the community.

Project coordinator Chris Todd led the efforts to communicate with the neighborhood about the solar array project. Despite initial concerns, the neighbors showed support for the church’s move towards renewable energy. The solar array not only aligns with the church’s mission of caring for the earth but also helps in significantly reducing the church’s utility costs.

Geothermal Heating and Cooling System

Alongside the solar array, St. Peter’s also implemented a geothermal heating and cooling system to regulate the temperature inside the building. This system not only enhances the comfort of the building but also aligns with the church’s goal of reducing utility costs and creating a more inviting space for community events.

The decision to opt for a geothermal system, despite the higher initial cost, reflects the church’s dedication to environmentally friendly practices. With the installation of both solar panels and a geothermal system, St. Peter’s is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also setting an example for other organizations to follow.

Financial and Environmental Impact

The solar-geothermal project at St. Peter’s required a significant investment, which was made possible through a combination of funding sources, including federal, state, and local incentives, as well as support from a nonprofit organization. The church also conducted a successful capital campaign to cover a portion of the costs, with the remaining balance expected to be paid off in 12 years.

By embracing renewable energy and sustainable practices, St. Peter’s United Church of Christ is not only benefitting the environment but also creating a positive impact on its finances. The community’s support and enthusiasm for the project highlight the importance of pursuing eco-friendly initiatives in today’s world.
