Maruti Suzuki, a leading automobile manufacturer in India, is taking significant steps towards sustainability by investing in renewable energy initiatives. The company has announced plans to invest approximately Rs 450 crore over the next three years to promote the use of sustainable energy sources. This investment follows Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to increasing its renewable energy projects, including solar power and biogas, to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to environmental conservation.

Maruti Suzuki’s Commitment to Renewable Energy

In line with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s ‘Waste to Energy’ programme, Maruti Suzuki has launched a pilot biogas plant at its Manesar facility for the fiscal year 2024-25. This initiative aims to produce 0.2 tonnes of biogas daily, with plans to scale up production as the company expands its manufacturing capacity. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, emphasized the importance of incorporating sustainable energy sources into their operations to support Suzuki’s ‘Environment Vision 2050’ and align with the Indian government’s focus on renewable energy.

Environmental Impact and Innovation

The pilot biogas plant is expected to generate approximately 1 lakh standard cubic meters of biogas in FY2024-25, offsetting around 190 tonnes of CO2 annually. This renewable energy source will power the manufacturing processes at the Manesar facility, while the organic manure byproduct will be utilized in horticulture, creating a zero-discharge model. The learnings from this pilot project will be implemented in Maruti Suzuki’s future manufacturing facilities, demonstrating the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Solar Power Expansion

In addition to the biogas plant, Maruti Suzuki has expanded its solar capacity to 43.2 MWp in the fiscal year 2023-24, reinforcing its dedication to sustainable energy solutions. By investing in solar power and biogas projects, Maruti Suzuki aims to reduce its environmental impact and contribute to a greener future. The company’s efforts to increase the share of renewable energy in its operations signal a positive step towards environmental conservation and sustainable manufacturing practices.

Conclusion

Maruti Suzuki’s investment in renewable energy initiatives highlights its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. By incorporating solar power and biogas projects into its operations, the company is setting a precedent for other industries to follow suit. As Maruti Suzuki continues to expand its manufacturing capacity and production output, its focus on renewable energy sources demonstrates a proactive approach towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting green manufacturing practices. This investment not only benefits the environment but also showcases Maruti Suzuki’s leadership in sustainable business practices within the automotive industry.
