Maruti Suzuki India has announced plans to invest Rs 450 crore in renewable energy initiatives over the next three years, focusing on solar power and biogas. The company aims to enhance its environmental sustainability initiatives and make its operations more eco-friendly. This investment will begin in the current fiscal year, with the goal of boosting renewable energy sources across its operations.

Maruti Suzuki’s Commitment to Renewable Energy

The car market leader recently invested Rs 120.8 crore in renewable energy projects for the fiscal year 2023-24. As part of its renewable energy plan, Maruti Suzuki has started production at a biogas plant in its Manesar facility. This initiative involves utilizing food waste and Napier grass as resources in alignment with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s ‘Waste to Energy’ program.

Maruti Suzuki plans to double its production capacity to four million units by 2031, with upcoming manufacturing facilities in Kharkhoda, Haryana, and Gujarat. The pilot biogas plant at Manesar is designed to produce 0.2 tons of biogas daily, offsetting around 190 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Key Focus Areas for Maruti Suzuki

As the company expands its renewable energy initiatives, it aims to optimize energy consumption, integrate renewable energy sources, implement efficient waste management protocols, and conserve water resources across its facilities. This strategic approach underscores Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Maruti Suzuki’s Managing Director & CEO, Hisashi Takeuchi, emphasized the importance of sustainable energy sources in the manufacturing process. He highlighted the company’s alignment with Suzuki’s Environment Vision 2050 and the Government of India’s focus on renewable energy. The biogas plant at Manesar represents a significant step towards creating a cleaner and more sustainable energy landscape within the industry.

Expanding Solar Capacity and Green Manufacturing

Maruti Suzuki is also increasing its solar capacity at the Manesar and Kharkhoda factories to transition towards green manufacturing practices. The company expanded its solar capacity to 43.2 MWp in the fiscal year 2023-24 and plans to add more capacity over the next two years, reaching a total of 78.2 MWp by the fiscal year 2025-26.

These initiatives align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal and demonstrate Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to environmental stewardship. By strategically investing in renewable energy sources and sustainable practices, Maruti Suzuki is setting a benchmark for eco-friendly operations within the automotive industry.

Maruti Suzuki’s significant investment in renewable energy initiatives underscores its dedication to environmental sustainability and green manufacturing. By focusing on solar power, biogas, and other renewable energy sources, the company is paving the way for a more eco-friendly future in the automotive sector. Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and conserving resources serves as a model for sustainable practices in the industry.
