The Copper Conundrum

The study examined 120 years of global copper mining data and highlighted the fact that the current rate of copper production is insufficient to meet the demands of renewable energy infrastructure. The Inflation Reduction Act’s mandate for 100% electric vehicle production by 2035 further exacerbates the situation, as EVs require significantly more copper than traditional vehicles. This shortage of copper extends to other sectors, such as wind turbines and grid upgrades, making it a pressing issue that needs to be addressed.

The Need for New Copper Mines

One of the key factors contributing to the copper shortfall is the lengthy permitting process for mining companies. With an average of 20 years from discovery to mine construction approval, the process hinders the timely establishment of new mines. The study’s modeling suggests that global copper production may fall short of future demand, posing challenges to renewable energy goals not just in the US but globally.

Addressing the Imbalance

Between 2018 and 2050, the global demand for copper is expected to increase substantially. To meet this demand, the study indicates the need for between 35 and 194 large new copper mines over the next three decades. These large-scale mines are crucial due to their significant production capacity. The establishment of new mines is essential to sustain the green transition and support the growing demand for copper.

Striking a Balance
