Summer is the perfect time for music festivals, and the Weayaya Solar-Powered Music Festival is making a triumphant return to the Rimbey area. Organized by Karen Magee, this unique festival combines sustainable energy with a diverse lineup of musical talent. After being on hiatus due to the pandemic, the festival is set to take place on July 6 and 7 on a farm located between Bentley and Rimbey.

Local and Diverse Musical Acts

The Weayaya Solar-Powered Music Festival showcases a range of musical genres, featuring 13 musical acts from both the local area and across the province of Alberta. From blues to hip-hop, roots to country-pop, and even Celtic-rock, the festival offers something for every music lover. Karen Magee aims to highlight the incredible talent within the province, making the festival a celebration of both music and community.

A Celebration of Solar Power and Music

The festival’s name, “Weayaya,” meaning solstice in Sioux, reflects its connection to solar energy. Since 2013, the festival has been hosted on Magee’s hobby farm, where 32 solar panels power the entire event. By utilizing renewable energy sources, the festival promotes sustainability and raises awareness about solar power as a viable energy option.

Small-Scale and Intimate Setting

Unlike larger music festivals, the Weayaya Solar-Powered Music Festival prides itself on maintaining a small and intimate setting. With a maximum of 150 tickets sold per day, attendees can enjoy a unique and personal experience with the performers. Many of the artists who have graced the festival stage in previous years are returning, creating a sense of continuity and community.

Investing in Solar Power

As a strong advocate for solar power, Karen Magee’s investment in solar panels has paid off both financially and environmentally. The festival’s reliance on solar energy not only reduces electricity costs but also demonstrates the feasibility of sustainable energy solutions. Magee’s commitment to solar power aligns with the festival’s mission of promoting eco-friendly practices.

Future Plans and Sustainability Initiatives

Looking ahead, the festival organizers are considering incorporating educational sessions on solar power into the event. By expanding the festival’s focus to include environmental awareness, they aim to educate attendees about the benefits of renewable energy. By combining music, sustainability, and community engagement, the Weayaya Solar-Powered Music Festival sets itself apart as a truly unique and forward-thinking event.
