Origis Energy and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) recently announced the commercial operation of the Golden Triangle II solar project in Mississippi, marking a significant milestone in the region’s transition to clean energy. This project, with a capacity of 150 MWac of solar paired with 50 MW of battery storage, is the first of three solar projects by Origis in Mississippi set to come online by 2025.

Origis Energy and TVA Collaboration

The partnership between Origis Energy and TVA aims to bolster Mississippi’s economic competitiveness through the development of clean energy infrastructure. Johan Vanhee, Chief Commercial and Procurement Officer at Origis, highlighted the importance of solar energy in advancing the state’s economic and energy security goals. The Golden Triangle II project is just the beginning of a broader initiative to foster a zero-carbon economy across Mississippi.

Expanding Clean Energy Portfolio

Golden Triangle II joins two other Origis renewable energy projects in Mississippi – Golden Triangle I and Optimist. When completed, these projects will have a total capacity of 550 MW plus 150 MW of battery storage, making it the largest battery storage portfolio under construction in the state. The combined solar panels across the three sites will generate enough power for approximately 126,000 homes.

Impact on Economic Growth

Following the pandemic, TVA’s commitment to affordable, reliable, and clean energy has contributed to significant economic growth in the Golden Triangle area. The recent University of Tennessee study projects a 22% population growth by 2050 in the TVA region. The three Origis projects are estimated to bring $106 million in construction and hiring gains to the area, with an additional $145 million in regional economic benefits over the life of the solar complex.

Community Support and Development

Community leaders and development partners have celebrated the addition of Golden Triangle II to Mississippi’s renewable energy industry. The project is expected to provide millions of dollars in revenue to schools and county government. RES, the construction services provider for Origis, will employ an estimated 500 individuals during the projects’ construction phase and create approximately 9 on-site jobs over the 35+ year project life.

Future Outlook

Origis Energy and TVA’s collaboration on the Golden Triangle II project represents a significant step towards advancing clean energy solutions and supporting Mississippi’s economic growth. The commercial operation of this solar project underscores the commitment to a cleaner, brighter future for the region. With continued support for sustainable energy initiatives, Origis Energy and TVA are poised to make a lasting impact on the state’s energy landscape.
