One solution to this issue is battery storage, which can help balance out the fluctuations in solar power generation and demand. However, while battery storage capacity is increasing, it still lags behind solar capacity additions. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), solar and battery storage are projected to constitute a significant portion of new electric-generating capacity in the U.S. in the coming years. In 2024, developers plan to add 62.8 GW of new utility-scale electric-generating capacity, with solar accounting for 58% and battery storage for 23% of these additions.

The growth in battery storage capacity is crucial for mitigating the impact of solar power on the grid by providing energy storage during periods of low solar output. As solar installations continue to expand, battery storage technologies will play a vital role in ensuring grid stability, reducing electricity prices, and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources into the power system.
