Wind and solar energy have emerged as the fastest-growing sources of electricity in history, according to a recent analysis by think tank Ember. The growth of wind and solar power has been remarkable, expanding from just 0.2 per cent of the global electricity mix in 2000 to 13.4 per cent in 2023. This surge in renewable energy sources has outpaced all other forms of electricity generation, marking a significant shift towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

The Rise of Wind and Solar Energy

Wind and solar energy have demonstrated unprecedented growth rates, with their combined share of the global electricity mix increasing by 1.5 percentage points in the past year alone. This rapid expansion is critical in surpassing the rising demand for electricity, leading to a projected peak in fossil fuel electricity generation and subsequent emissions. Ember’s analysis indicates that a new era of declining fossil fuel generation is on the horizon, driven by the ascendance of renewable energy sources.

Challenges and Opportunities in Clean Energy Expansion

While wind and solar energy have made significant strides in curbing fossil fuel power growth, there are challenges that need to be addressed to accelerate the transition to cleaner energy sources. Ember emphasizes the need for a more rapid expansion of clean electricity sources to achieve the global target of tripling renewables by 2030. Meeting this goal could reduce power sector emissions by nearly half by the end of the decade, aligning with the climate objectives set forth in the Paris Agreement.

Clean Capacity Expansion

In 2023, solar energy saw a substantial increase in new electricity generation globally, outpacing coal generation by more than two-fold. The share of solar energy in the overall energy mix rose to 5.5 per cent, while wind energy maintained a steady share of 7.8 per cent. This growth trajectory underscores the pivotal role of renewables in driving down carbon emissions and reshaping the global energy landscape.

Impact on Electricity Demand and Sector Emissions

Despite the progress in wind and solar capacity growth, electricity generation experienced a slower pace of growth in 2023 compared to previous years. Factors such as lower sunlight levels affecting solar generation and reduced wind generation due to unfavorable conditions contributed to the moderation in overall electricity generation. However, the long-term trend points towards an inevitable decline in power sector fossil fuel use and associated emissions, signaling a positive shift towards a more sustainable energy future.
