The Solar-Powered Buffalo Heritage Carousel is gearing up for its summer season kick-off at Canalside. This event, happening in conjunction with the inauguration of the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief, marks the fourth year of the carousel’s operation. The carousel, located in the sustainably-built KeyBank Roundhouse, is one of only five solar-powered carousels globally. This innovative approach to powering the carousel showcases Buffalo’s commitment to sustainability and renewable energy.

Celebrating the Legacy of the Carousel

This summer, the carousel will pay tribute to its late founder, Joan Bozer, who envisioned a solar-powered carousel when many doubted its feasibility. The dedication ceremony will also honor Walter Simpson, a key supporter of the carousel project. The use of cutting-edge solar technology, including a Tesla solar roof with locally-made solar shingles, highlights Buffalo’s embrace of green energy solutions.

Exciting Updates and New Ticketing Policy

As part of the summer season kick-off, the carousel will implement a new donation-based ticketing policy, encouraging visitors to contribute what they can to support the operation and maintenance of this historic attraction. Additionally, discounts on merchandise and membership sign-up incentives will be available throughout the weekend. These updates aim to enhance the visitor experience and ensure the sustainability of the carousel for years to come.

Special Events and Anniversaries

2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the carousel’s construction in Western New York. To celebrate this milestone, the carousel will host special events, including speeches from notable figures like NY State Senator Sean Ryan. Visitors can enjoy the beautifully restored menagerie carousel, which has been a beloved attraction at Canalside for generations.

Memorial Weekend Hours:

Saturday – Monday: 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Summer Hours (Wednesday – Saturday: 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sundays: 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Closed Mondays and Tuesdays) – Summer hours run through Labor Day.
