EDF Renewables North America and Enbridge Inc. recently celebrated the completion and start of commercial operation of the 150 MWac Fox Squirrel Solar Phase 1, marking a significant milestone in driving Ohio’s renewable energy future. This project, part of the larger 577 MWac development, is one of the largest utility-scale solar projects east of the Mississippi River. With the increasing demand for power in central Ohio, the Fox Squirrel Solar project will play a crucial role in meeting the region’s energy needs.

Amazon’s Renewable Energy Commitment

During the celebration event, Amazon announced power purchase agreements for the full generation capacity of the project. This move aligns with Amazon’s commitment to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, with a goal to achieve this milestone by 2025. As more corporations embrace renewable energy initiatives, projects like Fox Squirrel Solar contribute to Ohio’s efforts to attract businesses and foster economic growth in the state.

Enbridge’s Role in Energy Transition

Enbridge, a partner in the Fox Squirrel Solar project, highlighted the importance of the project in supporting the energy transition. With a history of over 70 years in Ohio, Enbridge sees the project as an opportunity to create jobs, provide economic benefits, and contribute to Amazon’s net-zero targets. The company’s commitment to renewable energy aligns with the broader goal of stabilizing Ohio’s electric energy infrastructure amidst growing energy demands.

Ohio Chamber of Commerce Support

The Ohio Chamber of Commerce expressed its support for projects like Fox Squirrel Solar, emphasizing the need to develop energy projects to meet the state’s increasing energy demands. With major utilities expected to double their energy needs in the next five years, the Chamber advocates for an inclusive approach to energy development. Fox Squirrel Solar represents a step towards balancing Ohio’s energy demands and supporting the state’s economic growth.

Project Overview and Impact

Comprised of 1.4 million panels and 159 inverters, Fox Squirrel Solar stands as the largest onshore renewable energy project developed by EDF Renewables North America. As the project progresses through its phases, it will not only contribute to Ohio’s renewable energy goals but also create job opportunities, economic benefits, and support Amazon’s sustainability objectives. The completion of Phase 1 marks a significant achievement in the journey towards a more sustainable energy future in Ohio.
