Domino Energy recently achieved a significant milestone by installing the first monopile foundation at the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project. This installation marks a major step forward for the renewable energy sector, showcasing Dominion Energy’s commitment to providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy to customers. The project, once completed, will have the capacity to power hundreds of thousands of homes and generate substantial fuel savings over the years.

Installation of Monopile Foundation

The monopile foundation was successfully installed by the Orion vessel, a heavy lift vessel operated by the DEME Group. This vessel, equipped with cutting-edge Vibro Hammer technology, was instrumental in installing the massive monopiles required for the CVOW project. The monopiles themselves, manufactured by EEW SPC, are crucial components that support the wind turbine generators and ensure the project’s structural integrity.

Environmental Protection Measures

Domino Energy has taken extensive precautions to protect the environment and marine species during the construction and operation of the CVOW project. To safeguard the North Atlantic right whale, a critically endangered species, specific measures have been implemented. These include avoiding installation of monopiles during the whale migration season, using bubble curtains to reduce underwater soundwaves, and employing Protected Species Observers on vessels to prevent collisions.

Partnership and Collaboration

The successful installation of the monopile foundation was made possible through a collaborative effort between Dominion Energy, DEME Offshore US, and Prysmian. By partnering with industry leaders and utilizing state-of-the-art technology, Dominion Energy has demonstrated its commitment to delivering Virginia-made energy to the community. The project also highlights the importance of skilled American union pile drivers in creating a robust workforce for offshore wind installations.

Future Plans and Sustainability

As the CVOW project progresses, Dominion Energy plans to continue installing monopiles over the coming months, with a focus on environmental sustainability and protection. By adhering to strict guidelines and implementing innovative solutions, the project aims to set a new standard for offshore wind energy development in the region. The long-term goal is to provide cost-effective, clean energy solutions while prioritizing environmental conservation and marine life protection.
